mg摆脱网站 Ascent Program Expands College Access
Plymouth State is excited to offer a program designed to increase access and provide an opportunity for students who may not be given a chance at a four-year college or university by traditional standards. We call this program Ascent. From our application pool, the Admissions team selects students who would normally be referred to a community college but show strong promise. If admitted to Plymouth State through the Ascent program, they will be provided expanded academic support. Our belief is that access to higher education in an environment that is structured and provides the reinforcements that these students need fits our mission as a university. We are aware of the value of a bachelor’s degree when it comes to future job opportunities and lifetime earning potential, and this is our way of opening those doors for more students.
Ascent is a transition program that begins with a summer experience and supports students throughout their four years at mg摆脱网站. Ascent students come to campus in August (a few days before the rest of the freshman class) where they’ll:
- have an opportunity to make friends and get to know the campus and the support it offers
- form bonds with our Ascent mentors (we call them “Ascentors”) who can help navigate the transition from high school to college life
- take a one-credit class designed to help them practice the skills successful college students must master early.
But Ascent doesn’t end with the summer. Throughout the fall and spring of their first year, they’ll continue to take our series Ascent courses (for a total of four credits) developing their speaking, writing, and communication technology skills with some of the best faculty on campus.
They’ll also work with staff and peer mentors in a weekly program to build their own toolkit of academic, social, career, and personal wellness resources. And they will be part of an exciting new advising model that places them in the middle of a team of supportive faculty and staff.
We understand succeeding in college can be a long climb. Our goal is to support them in their Ascent.
Our Ascent courses focus on skill-building and (in the final course) collaboration. The classes are arranged into groups that allow students to remain with the same classmates from August to May and to ensure that they have an opportunity to practice all three (writing, presenting/performing, and communication technology) skills in their first year.
The Ascent mentors are Ascent students who have already had success at Plymouth State. They can help new students make connections with student organizations, give them inside tips on the best places to study or meet with friends, and they can be a good listener when new students need to work through a problem or just vent.
As a condition of admission, students who are admitted to mg摆脱网站 via the Ascent Program will be required to participate in a week-long program in August and all academic and advising opportunities throughout the first year.
As School Counselors, you know the incoming students best, if you feel you have a student that would benefit from this program, please let the Admissions Counselor you work closely with know!
Accelerated High School Program
Plymouth State University (mg摆脱网站) offers an opportunity for high school students to expand their coursework by challenging themselves at the collegiate level. This opportunity is not meant to replace a high school curriculum or program but allows students to deepen their educational experience.
